«We Belarusians have never had anything permanent. Even land was not permanent: it was constantly being seized by somebody who erased all trace of us. It means that we ourselves had no permanence to live in, the way it’s written in the Old Testament that this one begat that one and that one begat someone else. We don’t know how to handle permanence. We can’t make sense of it. But now, finally, it has been bestowed upon us. Our permanence is – Chernobyl.»
Ten years after the Chernobyl nuclear accident, Nobel Prize-winning author Svetlana Alexievich returned to the place where she grew up, to give voice to the people who lived through the events at a stone's throw from the nuclear reactor. Her book consists of a series of monologues and is a record of the oral history of the people of Belarus, those who were scarred by the event - knowingly or unknowingly. Men, women, soldiers, elderly, children, Alexievich's narrators are those who worked in the months after the accident in the area, those who were forced to leave their homes, their villages, their land, and those who returned to live again in the Forbidden Zone.
Cypriot director Maria Kyriakou adapts Alexievich's book for the stage and puts together a performance about love and deep faith. Faith in big ideas, faith in one’s country but also love for the land and nature, love for a specific way of life and what it means to abandon it. Voices from Chernobyl is a performance about human existence, about the sense of belonging and about what it means to search for meaning in a world that gives you none.

A Cyprus-based theatre company, established in 2015 by directors Maria Varnakkidou and Kyros Papavassiliou. Since 2022 it has been functioning as an NGO.
À Vendre means “for sale” in French, and so our name is inspired by Arthur Rimbaud’s poem “Solde”. The poem is based on an ironic prayer which hopes that not everything in the world will be sold.

À VENDRE’s work is mostly related to devised theatre. The works include: “The Misunderstanding of a Sweet Land called Cyprus” (Kypria International Festival, 2013), “The Gaze” (2015), “RAM” (2020), “Come Together” (2021), “Hold it tight until the dawn”
(2022) and most recently Martin Crimb’s “Attempts on her life”. It has also co-produced the successful performance “Out of Necessity” (2021-2024).
Influenced and inspired from peoples’ contemporary lives, they strive to create work that makes the audience experience how alive theatre is.
