Fragments of Who
We Are
Curatorial Statement for CITF 2025
The Cyprus International Theatre Festival (CITF) 2025 proudly presents "Fragments of Who We Are", a captivating exploration of human identity and the threads that connect, define, and distinguish us. This year’s theme invites audiences to reflect on the many facets that shape individuality and community—memories, cultural heritage, personal struggles, and shared experiences. It celebrates diversity while reaffirming the universal quest to understand ourselves and each other.

"Fragments of Who We Are" evokes a profound contemplation of the shared yet multifaceted nature of human existence. At its core, it emphasizes the interconnectedness of our experiences, highlighting the beauty of embracing both the diversity and commonality that define humanity.

Each of us is a tapestry of moments, choices, histories, and dreams—"fragments" that, though distinct, resonate with universal themes of love, loss, hope, despair and resilience. These fragments remind us that our individuality contributes to a larger, collective narrative. By acknowledging this, we move closer to understanding and accepting one another, transcending differences.

Shared Humanity: Beneath cultural, social, and individual distinctions, we all experience fundamental emotions and challenges. Highlighting these shared experiences fosters empathy and dismantles prejudice.

Diversity as Enrichment: Each "fragment" represents a unique perspective that enriches the collective whole. Valuing others’ stories deepens our understanding of the world and ourselves.

Healing Through Connection: In a world often marked by division, recognizing our shared narratives fosters unity and mutual acceptance.

Acceptance of Complexity: Humanity is inherently complex and multifaceted. Embracing this in ourselves and others cultivates compassion and inclusivity.
This thematic framework invites audiences to explore key ideas:
Every story, dance, play, or visual piece at the festival becomes a fragment—a glimpse into a distinct facet of the human condition. Together, these fragments create a mosaic, encouraging audiences to find resonance, challenge perspectives, and discover new ways of seeing themselves and the world.

"Fragments of Who We Are" serves as a reminder that, though shaped by different environments, beliefs, and experiences, the essence of our humanity unites us. Through its performances and narratives, the festival becomes a mirror where audiences see themselves in others, fostering a culture of acceptance, respect, and celebration of our collective existence.
